Neurology & Acupuncture

Medical Acupuncture is a discipline that’s based in ancient knowledge of how the body heals. When healing mechanisms are influenced by acupuncture treatment, the body allows the restoration of homeostasis, or the body’s ability to regulate its internal environment in a more balanced way.

At the Dearing Chiropractic Neurology and Acupuncture Center in Franklin we’re providing one of many tools to encourage the natural healing response of the body. Our acupuncture treatment goes a step further in this ancient theory by integrating the scientific research of Neuroscience. Acupuncture’s effects on the brain are perhaps the most important component of treatment, beyond the theories based solely in meridians and energy, we treat to draw the brain’s awareness to the problematic area.

Comprehensive treatment calls on several disciplines, understanding the brain imbalance, the mind-body connection, and the theories of Chinese Medicine. This increases our accuracy of treatment, having better outcomes. Through neuroscience, we’re targeting specific brain pathways that are in need of stimulation, or pathways that need to be calmed down.

Trauma, nutritional issues, physical or emotional stress, and poor posture are among the problems that can cause neurological imbalances.
With our focus on complicated neurological conditions and chronic pain, many of the patients we see experience multiple areas of poor health, chronic organ dysfunction, and cognitive dysfunction. Many of these complex conditions are linked to brain imbalances that have accumulated over time. We are intensively educated and trained in the function of the brain as it relates to the individual body function. We draw parallels with Chinese Medicine and treat in tandem with the function of the bodies healing mechanisms.

Evaluation is comprehensive and the examination is focused on locating the source of the problem. We then create an individualized, targeted, drug-free treatment plan to enhance brain function and relieve symptoms as quickly and effectively as possible.

Is Acupuncture the best treatment for my condition?

Acupuncture is great because it gives a gentle stimulus globally throughout the body and brain, encouraging the body to change. Whereas other treatments such as Dry Needling, or Manual Therapy may be too intense to begin with for some people.

I’ve heard it’s relaxing, but needles make me nervous

While some have a fear of needles, once the person relinquishes for the sake of healing, they find the needles to not really feel like needles. Many points we use are barely felt if at all. Some “moving” points do give a sharp or achey stimulus which usually subsides in a few seconds.

Do I have to lay there for an hour?

No, some practices do but we find the optimal time for the needles to be placed depends on the condition and most respond within 2 -15 minutes. Chronic conditions may need a longer stay but rarely do we need an hour.
Most conditions of dysfunction of the body come out of excess response to a normal stimulus, such as

  • Muscle spasms – with back or neck pain or restless leg syndrome
  • Anxiety – with cognitive processes that spin out of control
  • Autoimmunity – immune system attacks the “self”
  • Arthritis
  • Pain, stiffness and swelling of joints

Excess reaction to the environment that goes on for too long, long term stress – anxiousness – pain…we’ll see a depletion of resources or energy/“chi” as it’s described in Chinese Medicine. Lacking an adequate response system, the body becomes overwhelmed such as in:

  • Migraines or Chronic tension headaches
  • Chronic Pain
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Gut dysfunction, gas, bloating, stomach cramps, and abdominal pain
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndromes
  • Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Depression and PTSD

Vestibular Disorders respond exceptionally well:

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Recurrent BPPV

Also, acupuncture is effective for other conditions that need influence such as in pregnancy and post partum conditions that need to achieve balance.

  • Labor Induction
  • Breastfeeding & Milk Production
  • Post Partum Depression or Emotional Balance
  • Menstrual Disorders and PMS
